GSDRC Helpdesk Research Report: Livelihoods in fragile contexts
gsdrc.org
–
There is strong literature on both livelihoods in general and livelihoods in fragile contexts, presenting conclusions and lessons from programmes and synthesising evidence from other contexts. This review mainly draws on lessons learned in the field, rather than rigorous evidence of impact. There are few impact studies conducted on programmes in fragile environments, as evaluations tend to focus on outputs and numbers reached rather than outcomes. Key findings: It is widely accepted in the

ELLA BRIEF: Latin America’s Rural Family Farmers: Evolutions in Access to Markets and Rural Income Structure
ella.practicalaction.org
–
In order to understand Latin America’s current experience with small-holder farming, it is helpful to understand two key changes in the region’s rural areas that have been evolving mainly over the past two decades: farmers’ increased access to markets and diversification of their income sources. This Brief takes a closer look at these two key evolutions, assessing the impact on small farmers and some of the driving forces, in particular by analysing the liberalisation policies of the 1990s and

ELLA BRIEF: Innovative Mountain Adaptation: A Case Study in Agroforestry’s Economic, Environmental and Social Benefits
ella.practicalaction.org
–
In mountain regions throughout the world, agricultural production is at risk from unsustainable production techniques, destructive human activities and the impacts of global climate change, all of which are accelerating deforestation and desertification. Across Latin America, South Asia and Africa, agroforestry represents one of the most successful strategies for meeting these challenges. Between 2006 and 2007, Soluciones Prácticas (Practical Action - Latin America)

Development Evaluation in Times of Turbulence : Dealing with Crises that Endanger Our Future
openknowledge.worldbank.org
–
Abstract: The presence of turbulence in multiple areas of our society--food, fuel, and finances-being but three critical areas presently being impacted means that long-held assumptions are no longer true, that the past is not prologue, and that the future is not clear. And enter into this unstable present the discipline of evaluation-a discipline formed and shaped in the past fifty years of stability, little turbulence, and strong assumptions that everything will go according to plan. Can mine reform help secure Afghanistan's economic future?
guardian.co.uk
–
In Afghanistan, government revenues account for less than 40% of expenditure while donor funding makes up the 60% shortfall. Donor support will likely reduce sharply over the next five years and there is an urgent need to find alternative revenue sources. Afghanistan has been a respected mining nation since ancient times and is home to some of the oldest mines in the world. Lapis lazuli was mined in the Badakhsan province of northern Afghanistan as early as 8000BC. There was a mining boom in

Aid policy: Helping whom, exactly?
economist.com
–
"Since America began donating surplus wheat, corn meal, vegetable oil and other farm commodities to the world’s hungry six decades ago, the programme has been captured by an “iron triangle” of farm interests, shippers and voluntary organisations, with plenty of help from Congress. Rules state that most food aid must be bought from American farmers and processed in America. At least half must then be carried on American-flag ships. With competition severely curbed, ocean shipping eats up 16% of

China’s slowdown: the impact on Africa
blogs.ft.com
–
"According to OECD research quoted in the S&P study, for every one per cent of Chinese economic growth, the GDP of sub-Saharan Africa’s low-income countries (e.g. Ghana, Mozambique, Rwanda) increases by 0.3 per cent and GDP of middle-income countries (e.g. Angola, South Africa) increases by 0.4 per cent. "However, the party may now be over, or at least quietening down a bit. And the miners face the biggest hangover. The expected slow-down in infrastructure and construction investment in

A Unified Approach to Climate Change and Hunger
reliefweb.int
–
Studies out of Ethiopia, India, Kenya and Niger show that children born during natural hazards, like droughts or floods, are more likely to be malnourished. Yet as the climate changes, it is poor countries - already struggling with hunger and food insecurity - that are increasingly likely to face these natural hazards. A recent conference considered this issue from the perspective of “climate justice” - an approach to climate change focusing on the rights of vulnerable people who are the least
