The Association between Remarriage and HIV Infection

The literature shows that divorced, separated, and widowed individuals in Africa are at significantly increased risk for HIV. The results of this study further show that remarried individuals form a large portion of the population—usually larger than the divorced, separated, or widowed—and that they also have higher than average HIV prevalence.

Comparing Condom Use with Different Types of Partners

Based on nationally representative samples from 13 Sub-Saharan African countries, this paper reinforces and expands previous findings that condom use in general is low in this region, men report using condoms more frequently than women, and unmarried individuals report they use condoms more frequently than married individuals with their spouse.

Utilization of HIV-Related Services from the Private Health Sector

The analysis indicates that the private for-profit health sector is active in HIV-related service delivery, although the level of participation varies by region and country. As the global AIDS response evolves from emergency relief to sustained country programs, broader consideration of the role of the private health sector may be warranted.

Are Nepali students at risk of HIV?

This report shows that the rate of condom use at first sexual intercourse is low among the students. It indicates students are exposed to health hazards through their sexual behavior. Findings from this study point to areas that policy and programmes can address to provide youth with access to the kinds of information and services they need to achieve healthy sexual and reproductive lives.

Sexual vulnerability and HIV seroprevalence among the deaf and hearing impaired in Cameroon

This quantitative cross-sectional study examines sexual behavior of a target group of hearing impaired persons in Yaounde, the capital city of the Republic of Cameroon. It measures their HIV prevalence to enable assessment of their sexual vulnerability and to help reduce the gap in existing HIV serology data among people with disabilities in general and the deaf in particular.

HAITI: Risk and treatment amid the rubble

In the aftermath of Haiti's 7.0 magnitude quake, one of the Caribbean's largest antiretroviral (ARV) programmes is struggling to resurrect itself from the rubble. The Haitian government estimated that 24,000 Haitians were accessing ARVS before the quake, now, fewer than 40 percent of those on treatment have been able to access ARVs, according a recent UNAIDS situation assessment.
