Spearheading Hand Wash & Menstrual Hygiene Practices in India
heeals.org
–
HEEALS, a non-profit organization has collaborated with various schools to spread awareness about the importance of hand wash and menstrual hygiene among children of variable ages. It's often seen that a simple practice like washing hands is not given enough importance by children as well as adults. But, it is a medically proven fact that proper hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick. Similarly, menstrual hygiene is also an ignored practice among adolescent girls because of

Peer review in ex ante and ex post evaluation: probability based improvements in vote tallying.
stconsultant.blogspot.com
–
In this 4th in a series of posts, the use of probability analysis to improve the information content of ratings and rankings is extended to ex post evaluation of projects as well as ex ante review. The approach could be used in a variety of development projects. It might even be used in the context of village decision making.

Video: Sugata Mitra: The child-driven education
ted.com
–
In this video of his TED talk, Education scientist Sugata Mitra tackles one of the greatest problems of education -- the best teachers and schools don't exist where they're needed most. In a series of real-life experiments from New Delhi to South Africa to Italy, he gave kids self-supervised access to the web and saw results that could revolutionize how we think about teaching.

Aid and Universal Primary Education
halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr
–
Universal Primary Education (UPE) is one of the main objectives of development aid. However, very little empirical evidence of its effectiveness actually exists. Until very recently, the quality of available data was not sufficient to obtain robust results regarding the relationship between international aid and educational achievements. In this article, the latest, more disaggregated and more reliable data is used to study the relationship between aid to education and educational achievements

Knowledge is growth
oecd.org
–
The growing awareness that knowledge-based capital (KBC) is driving economic growth is prevalent in today’s global marketplace. KBC includes a broad range of intangible assets, like research, data, software and design skills, which capture or express human ingenuity. The creation and application of knowledge is especially critical to the ability of firms and organisations to develop in a competitive global economy and to create high-wage employment.

Congratulations, College Graduate. Now Tell Us: What Did You Learn?

"A few years ago, two researchers tracked a representative sample of 2,300 students at 24 colleges and universities who took the CLA (the Collegiate Learning Assessment) three times in their college careers: at the beginning of their freshman year, at the end of their sophomore year, and finally, before graduation. "The study’s bottom line: 45 percent of students in the study made no gains in their writing, complex reasoning, or critical-thinking skills during their first two years of

From Estimating Probabilities of Ratings to Figures of Merit and Rankings
stconsultant.blogspot.com
–
Two previous posts advocated a quantitative approach to peer review based on probability theory, Bayes rule and information theory. This post focuses on a figure of merit for ranking of submissions and a sequential process that seeks to maximize information where it is most needed deciding among submissions. Subjective Probabilities, Ratings, Handicappers, and Open Access Online Scientific Literature
stconsultant.blogspot.com

In a previous post I proposed an iterative process that can be used sequentially add information to the rating of research proposals, providing quantitative results. This post extends that method to show how information on the source of the proposal and the source of the review can be used to improve the results. It also provides a measure of the information provided by the review at each stage. The method is extended to rating open access online scientific publications and non-peer

ICT in the classroom: Namibian teachers share their experience
elearning-africa.com
–
Education has been a top priority in Namibia for some time now. The government has been directing a lot of resources and expertise into establishing effective systems and policies that will have a positive impact in classrooms and on students. Information and communication technologies have been a very important part of this process, and classrooms are benefiting from better technology and a more learner-centric education system. The eLearning Africa News Service spoke with Dr Maggy Beukes-

Knowledge repositories – building blocks for learning
elearning-africa.com
–
A knowledge repository is an online database that organises, displays and categorises information. It can be used to provide support and management for many services, including encouraging open access to scholarly research, preserving digital materials for the long term and showcasing academic research. But whilst repositories are becoming increasingly commonplace in Africa and around the world as houses of shared institutional memory, information on and experience of how best to implement

Probability Analysis to Improve Scientific Peer Review
stconsultant.blogspot.com
–
Use of a proposed Bayesian approach to the information from a sequential peer review process may improve the quality of decisions and reduce the effort required of peer reviewers. The process can be carried out with a limited amount of data relatively easily obtained from an existing panel review process. This approach might also be used to improve monitoring and evaluation, as when an organization uses user feedback to evaluate its services.
