Palawan, Voices from the lost frontier

tinyurl.com
-
In March 2006, the Philippines’ President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has called for a revitalization of mining nation-wide. The future of Palawan, known as the Philippines’ “Last Frontier” is now under serious threat. The island was declared a “Man and Biosphere Reserve” by the UNESCO and it is also the home of vanishing and isolated indigenous communities. Despite the numerous policies and laws establishing the entire province as a protected area, Palawan is becoming one of the most attractive

AREU -- Student Politics in Afghanistan
0
areu.org.af
-
In Afghanistan today, student politics moves between two poles: patronage and rebellion. Student politics in Afghanistan has not been the object of much scholarly attention, but in the 1960-70s it had an important influence on the development of political parties, which in turn shaped Afghanistan’s entry into mass politics in the late 1970-80s. The universities were where many of the political movements that became protagonists in the civil wars and today’s political scene started taking shape.

Community led Heritage Tourism
0
blossomystore.com

We are developing models for using heritage based tourism as a vehicle of development for communities rich in intangible cultural heritage. It is a ground reality that there is often appropriation of tourism business by outsiders. Further, it has been observed that in some of the heritage tourism destinations indigenous people become merely a part of an exhibition mechanism and have little say in the way they are represented. Our goal is to make community an

-
This paper uses panel data for Mexico for 1997 to 1999 in order to test several theoretical findings regarding the impact of a conditional cash transfer programs on child labor, emphasizing the differential impact on indigenous households. Using data from the conditional cash transfer program, PROGRESA, in Mexico, we investigate the interaction between child labor and the indigenous status of the household and find that indigenous children showed a greater probability of working in 1997 and

Religion versus Ethnicity as a Source of Mobilisation: Are There Differences?
0
microconflict.eu
-
The root causes of most violent conflicts lie in economic and political factors. Modern and mobile. The future of livestock production in Africa's drylands
0
iied.org
-
This book is about the critical role mobile livestock keeping plays in the economic prosperity of Africa’s drylands. Across East and West Africa an estimated 50 million livestock producers support their families, their communities, and a massive meat, skins and hides industry based on animals that are fed solely on natural dryland pastures. Where other land use systems are failing in the face of global climate change, mobile livestock keeping, or pastoralism, is generating huge national and
