Empowering Adolescent Girls in Port-au-Prince: 'We are the future of Haiti'
blogs.worldbank.org
–
For almost a year, the World Bank has been supporting the Adolescent Girls Initiative (AGI) in Haiti, where much of the country is still recovering from the 2010 earthquake. Through this program, 1,000 low-income Haitian girls between the ages of 17 and 20 who did not complete secondary school have been able to receive vocational and technical training in areas of work not traditionally open to women.

GSDRC Helpdesk Research Report: Violence against women and girls in Haiti
gsdrc.org
–
No official government statistics are available on the prevalence of violence against women and girls in Haiti. Experts acknowledge that reports by non-governmental organisations and small-scale, isolated surveys reveal only a partial picture. Moreover, much of the available analysis is focused on urban areas, and in particular Port-au-Prince; fewer studies document the incidence of domestic violence in rural areas. Available evidence suggests a significant portion of victims of sexual violence

From Conflict and Crisis to Renewal
europe.unfpa.org
–
The report highlights how women in conflict and post-conflict situations—as well as in emergencies or protracted crises— are faring a decade later. It draws on the experiences of women and girls, men and boys, living in the wake of conflict and other catastrophic disruptions. The report also documents efforts of traditional elders and religious leaders who strive to comfort the suffering and bring decimated societies back to their cultural roots and principles, so often warped by war,

Nobody Remembers Us
hrw.org
–
This documents the lack of access to reproductive and maternal care in post-earthquake Haiti, even with unprecedented availability of free healthcare services. The report also describes how hunger has led women to trade sex for food and how poor camp conditions exacerbate the impact of sexual violence because of difficulties accessing post-rape care. It looks at how recovery efforts have failed to adequately address the needs and rights of women and girls, particularly their rights to health

Development Cooperation Beyond the Aid Effectiveness Paradigm: A women’s rights perspective
dochas.ie
–
The multiple crises that the world is facing—food, climate change, financial, economic, ethical, and in care work—leave no doubt that we are dealing with a systemic, structural crisis. In such times, development aid is particularly key for the survival of poor people, the majority of whom are women. The progress, particularly on gender equality, made in the Accra Agenda for Action (AAA) and the Doha Declaration on Financing for Development (2008)21 is encouraging because the recognition of the

Our Bodies Are Still Trembling: Haitian Women Continue to Fight Against Rape
canadahaitiaction.ca
–
Over the past 12 months, deteriorating conditions in the IDP camps, a deadly cholera outbreak, political upheaval, and persistent impunity for rape have increased insecurity and the risk of sexual violence for Haitian women. Women and girls are put at increased risk of rape by the collapse of social infrastructures, the erosion of family and community networks, inequitable access to social services, absence of law and order, lack of secure housing or safe neighborhoods and dependence resulting

The Haiti Gender Shadow Report
reliefweb.int
–
The motivation of this Gender Shadow report (GSR) is the imperative for women's full participation and leadership in all phases of the reconstruction of Haiti, as mandated by UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and other internationally recognized standards that were reprioritized at a recent Millennium Development Goal summit. These standards require that a gender perspective be integrated into ongoing post-disaster and reconstruction planning at every stage: assessment, planning,

Aftershocks: Women speak out against sexual violence in Haiti’s camps
amnesty.org
–
Sexual and other forms of gender-based violence5 were widespread in Haiti before 12 January 2010, but the earthquake shattered what few protection mechanisms did exist.6 Since the earthquake, the specific needs of girls and women living in camps relating to the prevention of and response to gender-based violence have been inadequate. The risk of rape and other forms of gender-based violence in Haiti’s camps has increased dramatically in the past year. Perpetrators are often members of youth

World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB): Haiti Post-Earthquake Track Record on Gender, Agriculture and Rural Development
genderaction.org
–
The newest global food crisis has struck at an especially vulnerable time for the world's poor, making food increasingly unaffordable and reducing incomes of impoverished farmers, the majority of whom are women. In light of the impact of rising food prices affecting impoverished Haitians during post-earthquake recovery efforts, Gender Action is tracking the gender sensitivity and social impacts of recent World Bank and IDB agriculture and rural development investments in the country. The goal

Haiti Gender Shadow Report: Ensuring Haitian Women's Participation and Leadership in All Stages of National Relief and Reconstruction
genderaction.org
–
Following the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake, Haiti's government, supported by the World Bank, led an ambitious Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA)-an operative blueprint for reconstruction. Astonishingly, the PDNA failed to address gender issues. This Gender Shadow report (GSR) provides the missing gender content for PDNA policymakers, donors, civil society groups and all stakeholders involved in Haiti's reconstruction. It follows a parallel outline to the PDNA by presenting issues

Women and powers: issues for a true development in Haiti
The principle of equality between the sexes is admitted nowadays on the level of the human rights. The Vienna Declaration and Platform of Action signed by 171 States in June 1993 guarantees it. Indeed, it calls for: the elimination of sexual discrimination and violence against women, ensures equal access to the fundamental social services (education, health, etc.), equal opportunity to take part in political and economic decisions, equality in law, and equal rights of the citizens in all
