Video: Praxis Discussion Series: Urbanisation
youtube.com
–
For the first time ever in human history, more than half of us live in cities. But rapid urbanisation brings vast challenges. Many cities are starkly unequal, with high levels of environmental damage. One in three city dwellers live in slum conditions; many lack a secure home, a job, basic sanitation or safe water supply. What's driving urbanisation? How can we make our cities more inclusive? What does resilient, sustainable urbanisation look like, globally, in Asia, and in the Pacific? This is

Does Immigration Policy Affect the Education- Occupation Mismatch?
ftp.iza.org
–
This paper analyses the impact of a change in Australia’s immigration policy, introduced on 1st July 1999, on migrants’ probability of being over-/under-educated or correctly matched. The policy change consists of stricter entry requirements about age, language ability, education, and work experience. The results indicate that those who entered under more stringent conditions – the second cohort – have a lower probability to be overeducated and a correspondingly higher probability of being

–

Migration Policy Can Boost PISA Results
skbf-csre.ch
–
Switzerland radically changed its migration policy in the mid-nineties from a «non-qualified only» policy to one that favors the immigration of highly qualified migrants. To analyze the impact of this change on the schooling outcomes of migrants, this paper compares the PISA (OECD Programme for International Student Assessment) results from 2000, which were not yet affected by the change in the migration policy, with the PISA 2009 test. The analysis shows that almost 70% of the 43-point

Aboriginal population mobility in Alice Springs
nintione.com.au
–
In central Australia there has been an ongoing debate about urban drift – its existence and impact. Not much is known about the nature of the urban drift, whether in fact there is drift or circular mobility, or the role of major service centers such as Alice Springs. Many people may move to Alice Springs with accompanying family members for long-term medical treatment and then move back to their homes in remote communities. This research provides some insight into the issues related to mobility

migrationpolicy.org
–
Immigration can be a powerful tool for supporting a country’s economic growth and prosperity, but its success in accomplishing that objective depends on well-designed and carefully implemented immigration policies. Towards Distributed Citizen Participation
snurb.info
–
This paper examines the rapid and ad hoc development and interactions of participative citizen communities during acute events, using the examples of the 2011 floods in Queensland, Australia, and the global controversy surrounding Wikileaks and its spokesman, Julian Assange. The self-organizing community responses to such events which can be observed in these cases bypass or leapfrog, at least temporarily, most organizational or administrative hurdles which may otherwise frustrate the

Welcome to Malaysia !
youtube.com

Following the announcement of Australia's plans to deport 800 asylum seekers, this shocking report takes a look at the plight of refugees in Malaysia, where they are considered illegal immigrants. Although granted protected status by the UN, many are victims of judicial caning, civilian militia raids and imprisonment in overcrowded detention centres, with one family seen living in self-imposed house arrest out of fear. A top Malaysian Government official comments, as well as Amnesty

The Australian Government goes viral on refugees
whydev.org
–
This decision by the Australian Federal Government to “influence people not to get on a rickety, dangerous boat, not to take that very risky voyage across the northern waters to Australia, and not to engage with people smugglers” through new media is a misguided, naive Gen Y approach by Baby Boomers. Does the Australian Federal Government truly believe that this will support their efforts to deter people smugglers and asylum seekers? What do they hope to capture in their filming? It is a

When selling the farm becomes a foreign concept
smh.com.au
–
How much of our farming land should foreigners be allowed to buy? This issue is starting to get traction. But the issue isn’t simple. Australia welcomes foreign investment, as it should, and we don’t want to send out the wrong signals. And is buying farm land qualitatively different from acquiring other vital assets? The opposition is taking a high profile on farmland ownership; last week it established a front-bench working group to look at options to strengthen the rules governing the sale
