Colombia: the resource picture for poverty reduction
globalhumanitarianassistance.org
–
The vast majority of Colombia’s 3.6 - 5.2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been forced from their homes as a result of the complex ongoing conflict between leftist guerrilla groups and the Colombian armed forces – which began in the mid-1960s – also involving right-wing paramilitary groups that became active in the 1990s. A process for negotiating peace was formally announced in October 2012, when President Santos announced a framework agreement for peace negotiations with the

From Highly Skilled to Low Skilled: Revisiting the Deskilling of Migrant Labor
dirp4.pids.gov.ph
–
Traditional immigration countries such as United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand give preference to migrants with higher education, skills, and professional training that they can transfer to their countries. However, it is not unusual for migrant professionals, especially those from less developed countries, to experience 'deskilling' or occupational downward mobility. Though admitted as professionals based on the immigration policies of the destination countries, many of them are

Homecoming: Return and reintegration of irregular migrants from Nigeria
ippr.org
–
Informed by new qualitative research, this report offers a set of recommendations to improve the process of returning irregular migrants from the EU to Nigeria, and the reintegration support available to them, to ensure that policy in this area is effective, efficient, humane and sustainable. Nigerians represent a sizeable portion of the millions of irregular migrants currently residing within the EU. This presents significant challenges to the Nigerian government as well as European

Corrigendum: Migration and Development Brief 20
blogs.worldbank.org
–
The Migration and Development Brief 20 issued on April 19, 2013 contained a tabulation error in Table 1 of page 11. This affects the estimates highlighted below, which were shifted by one year. For example, the remittance inflows for the World in 2012 were reported as $514 billion, instead of $529 billion. The table has been corrected in this version of the Migration and Development Brief 20 which is also posted at the World Bank's migration page.

Connecting people, sharing knowledge, increasing transparency.
landportal.info
–
Access to knowledge is essential for individuals and communities seeking to secure land rights, particularly for women.Over recent decades land governance groups have come to use the Internet in their practice, but it’s full potential is by no means realized. In this paper the authors explore how online platforms can support land advocacy and governance, drawing on learning from current practice, and highlighting emerging frontiers of relevance to the field. This paper focuses in particular on

Migration, Remittances and Rural Employment Patterns: Evidence from China
halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr
–
This paper explores the rural labor market impact of migration in China using cross-sectional data on rural households for the year 2007. A switching probit model is used to estimate the impact of belonging to a migrant-sending household on the individual occupational choice categorized in four binary decisions: farm work, wage work, self-employment and housework. The paper then goes on to estimate how the impact of migration differs across different types of migrant households identified along

UNDP Results: Civil Society and Civic Engagement in the Arab States Region
The peoples’ movement that spread across North Africa and other parts of the Arab world in 2011 expressed a growing demand for government accountability, especially by the younger generation. It resulted in political transitions or reforms in half a dozen countries, affecting the lives of over 100 million people. In spite of significant gains, many countries still face pressing problems — civil unrest, rising unemployment, weak institutional capacities and challenges in ensuring fair elections

The Opening of Burmese Borders: Impacts on Migration
migrationinformation.org
–
The international community has reacted positively to Burma's transition from authoritative regime to civilian (or quasi-civilian) government; however, ethnic and religious and other forms of violence, discrimination, and exposure to and unpreparedness for harsh climatic events will likely continue to disrupt the lives of many Burmese in the absence of substantial and viable shifts in policy. In the meantime, Burma has and will likely continue to increase engagement with the international

Children in every country, culture and society face various forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence. Violence takes place at home, in school, in institutions, at work, in the community, in armed conflict and natural disasters. In many countries, violence against children such as corporal punishment remains legal and socially accepted. Growing up with violence seriously affects a child’s development, dignity, and physical and psychological integrity. It is, therefore, timely that

Migration and Remittances during the Global Financial Crisis and Beyond
iadb.org
–
Remittances are the most tangible link between migration and development. At more than $325 billion per year, remittances sent by migrants to developing countries are larger than official development assistance as well as private debt and portfolio equity flows. Remittances help families all over the world to pay for food, housing, education, and health expenses and even invest in small businesses. At the national level, remittances help off set current account deficits and shore up

Remittances and Labour Supply in Post-Conflict Tajikistan
ids.ac.uk
–
This paper analyzes the impact of remittances on the labour supply of men and women in post-conflict Tajikistan. We find that on average men and women from remittance-receiving households are less likely to participate in the labour market and supply fewer hours when they do. The negative effect of remittances on labour supply is smaller for women, which is an intriguing result as other studies on remittances and labour supply (primarily focused on Latin America) have shown that female labour

The Impact of Migration and Remittances on Wealth Accumulation and Distribution in Rural Thailand
wcfia.harvard.edu
–
This paper studies the impact of internal migration and remittance flows on wealth accumulation and distribution in 22 rural villages in Nang Rong, Thailand. Using data from 943 households, the study constructs indices of household productive and consumer assets with principal components analysis. The changes in these indices from 1994 to 2000 are modeled as a function of households’ prior migration and remittance behavior while correcting for potential selectivity bias with propensity score

Remittances and the Wage Impact of Immigration
web.williams.edu
–
This paper examines the impact of remittances on the wages of native workers in the sending country. The model shows that the wage impact of immigration depends on the competing effects of an increase in labor market competition and an increase in the consumer base. Immigrant remittances provide a unique way of isolating this latter effect since they reduce the consumer base but not the workforce. The predictions of the model are tested using an unusually rich German data set that has detailed

How the African Diaspora is using social media to influence development
guardian.co.uk
–
Something transformational has been happening online: African voices have begun populating social media, quickly becoming the undisputed champions of development punditry. Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media are bringing African voices and new, varied narratives to the forefront. These tools are also being used to replace staid development paradigms, by organising and developing African-driven institutions. With social media bringing African voices to the fore, gone are days when
