Preventive and educative approaches for reducing corruption: an article by Zahid Hossain, Bangladesh (The Daily Star)
thedailystar.net
–
"There is no denying the fact that widespread and pervasive corruption in government and public administration is now the number one problem of the country. It is also true that the recent trend of growing awareness amongst the people about corruption in government and public is beyond doubt a highly positive indication. In governance terms, corruption threatens democratic public institutions by permitting the influence of improper interest on the use of public resources and power, and by

Bangladesh: Acid Survivors Foundation
acidsurvivors.org
–
It is widely recognized that women in Bangladesh are subjected to various forms of violence because existing gender relations invariably relegate them to a subordinate position in relevant socioeconomic, legal and cultural contexts. In Bangladesh, one particularly vicious and damaging form of violence is acid throwing. While acid violence is treated as a specific, isolatable human rights violation, it is part of a broader type of brutality and cruelty prevalent beyond Bangladesh. The

Creating Safe Space and New Opportunities for Women Workers
proxied.changemakers.net
–
Most young women who work in Bangladesh's garment industry live in the urban slums mushrooming around the industrial areas of major cities. Local gangs control the housing, so the women become prey to slumlords who charge exorbitant rents, equal to about one-third the women's income. Mashuda Shefali Khatun, a dedicated activist for women's rights, is pioneering a solution to their plight by creating the first low-cost, safe, decent hostels for working women in Dhaka City. Beyond housing,

WHISPERS TO VOICES: Gender and Social Transformation in Bangladesh
siteresources.worldbank.org
–
'Several recent reports have highlighted the dramatic improvements in education - especially girls’ secondary education - in fertility, mortality, immunization, water and sanitation, rural roads and micro-credit. This is despite low per capita incomes. Countries with similar levels of per capita income have much worse outcomes and Bangladesh emerges as a positive outlier. We add to this list of paradoxes. One of these for instance, has to do with age at marriage. Low age at marriage in

Stateless and Starving: Persecuted Rohingya Flee Burma and Starve in Bangladesh
humansecuritygateway.com
–

In this emergency report Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) presents new data and documents dire conditions for these persecuted Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. No Man's Land: Rohingya Trying to Survive in Bangladesh
web1.doctorswithoutborders.org
–
For decades, thousands of Rohingya, an ethnic and religious minority from Myanmar, have sought refuge in Bangladesh. Today, despite the well-known situation in their country of origin, just 28,000 of these are recognized as prima facie refugees by the Government of Bangladesh, and live in official camps under the supervision of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
