Governments, in their functions, collect and produce data: budgets, statistics, contracts, etc. Most of this data rightfully belongs to the people, so many countries have transparency laws to ensure it’s made available. All this data could be used for many purposes by citizens if it were in appropriate, computer-readable formats and under permissive licenses.
