This project, produced by BilbioRedes in Chile, seeks to promote expression of local experiences, cultural heritage and identity through the training and use of web applications adapted for these means. Nosotros en Internet (Us on the Internet) has been rewarded in 2006 by The Stockholm Challenge.
BiblioRedes aims at modernizing Public Libraries and also, meeting the country’s strategic need to bridge the digital divide. This aims at reducing the existing inequities, related to access to new technologies and culture. BiblioRedes is a private-public initiative meant to reduce the exclusions related to the digital divide, affecting broad sectors of the population, taking public libraries as its basis, and to assure that every Chilean can access and use e new technologies as a tool to improve their quality of life and facilitate their participation in modern society. An essential element in our strategy is to promote the use of web tools by the local communities through the Nosotros en Internet service available on www.biblioredes.cl. This is possible thanks to a training and public access computing program in public libraries and the use of an application that manages the contents. For the latter we used .Net on Microsoft Content Management Server, which integrates the most commonly used Office applications. Nosotros en Internet is oriented to diverse cultural, social and economic organizations which do not have other alternatives to be integrated to the society of information and which are present throughout Chile, rescuing the cultural diversity they represent.
