The interim government on February 27 launched two national guidelines and a national communication strategy to check possible spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic in Bangladesh. At the launch ceremony, health and family welfare adviser ASM Matiur Rahman urged all concerned to create awareness among the people of effective prevention for the disease. Terming HIV/AIDS the deadliest, he said, 'Bangladesh is still considered a low-prevalence country for HIV/AIDS infections. But we should not be complacent.' He stressed the role of media in creating awareness. 'Because of mass awareness, we are in a better position compared with our neighbours in this regard.' The adviser formally launched the National Guideline for Management of Sexually Transmitted Infections and the National Guideline for Anti-retroviral Therapy for HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh. He also launched the National AIDS Communication Strategy 2005–2010 at the programme in the conference room of the health ministry. The national guideline for anti-retroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh has been formulated as the treatment guidelines for HIV-positive persons. (via New Age National, 28 February 2007)
