Monitoring and Evaluation of Artificial Recharge of Ground Water Programmes, India

The importance of meeting overgrowing demand of water is crucial for agricultural purpose. The National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA) under Planning Commission, Government of India, New Delhi conducted a study on ‘Monitoring and Evaluation of Artificial Recharge of Ground Water Programmes/Schemes/Projects in the Rainfed Regions of Maharashtra’ through nine Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS), in 31 rainfed talukas covering 11 districts spread over the entire Maharashtra State. The programmes were found not only be the cost effective but also significantly recharged the ground water as reflected by 1 to 3.7 m rise in water table. A number of suggestions have also been made to improve the effectiveness of CSS for artificial recharge of ground water in the hard-rock regions.
