International Polar Heritage Committee. One of the IPHC’s network of experts, Dr. Richard Mackay has contributed an interesting chapter to a book published recently by Australian Scholarly Publishing. The book “Object Lessons – Archaeology and Heritage in Australia”, edited by Jane Lydon and Tracy Ireland, contains a series of case studies that include a very interesting polar related contribution by Mackay entitled: “Ice, Icon and Identity: The Meaning of Mawson’s Huts”. This gives a very comprehensive overview of the cultural heritage value of the site, the origin of the huts, the history associated with them, and the issues arising from various initiatives to preserve and protect them.
