On April 15th 2005, The IT Minister of India Mr. Dayanidhi Maran dedicated a CD containing Free Tamil Software Tools to the Nation. Tamil is a language spoken by more than 100 million people all over the world. This CD contained the following tools: 1) Open Type Fonts; 2) OpenOffice 1.1.4 in Tamil; 3) Tamil Browser; 4) Tamil Email Client; 5) Tamil OCR, Spell Checker and Online Dictionary. Of these tools OpenOffice, Browser and Email Tools were contributed by DGF ICT R&T Centre's ( http://www.ictrt.org.in ) Bharateeyaoo (http://www.ncb.ernet.in/bharateeyaoo) group. The CD will be mass distributed along with major Tamil magazines and newspapers. About 3 million copies of the CD will be distributed free of cost. This is the first time such a major step has been taken to make available computing tools in a regional language and DGF ICT R&T Centre is happy to be part of it.
