Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Department of Education, UN Agencies,
International Non-Governmental Organizations, youth leaders, media personnel and other
concerned organizations gathered during the National Consultation Workshop on Expanding and
Improving Skills-based Sex, Relationships and HIV Education in Nepal. This workshop was
jointly organized by MOE, UNESCO, UNAIDS, UNICEF and UNFPA to share the recently
drafted International Guidance on Sexuality Education. The participants reviewed the document
and discussed how the guidance could be used and mainstreamed in Nepal, what might be
opportunities for doing so and what could be challenges/barriers. All together 45 persons
participated. Senior level officials from the Ministry of Education, the National Center of AIDS
and STI Control, the HIV/AIDS and STI Control Board, UNAIDS, UNICEF and UNESCO
presented their views and remarks. The opening ceremony was chaired by Secretary from the
Ministry of Education. In general the International Guidance on Sexuality Education was well
received and accepted by all of the participants and recommendations for a very practical process
were put forward.
